Our New Dentist Has A Vision

Dr. Audra Wessel, DDS is our newest dentist at People’s Center. Dr. Wessel has over 20 years of experience and recently we had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Wessel to ask her about her work, what inspired her to become a dentist, and how she found her way to working here.

So tell me a little about yourself:

“I was born in Eagan, Minnesota but I grew up all over the Midwest. I graduated from the University Of Minnesota School Of Dentistry in 1994. From there, I’ve worked in all areas of dentistry from the corporate side, working as a dentist, and I even owned my own practice.”

What has inspired you to become a dentist?

“I was actually in medical school when I was inspired to become a dentist. I remember having to sculpt teeth in one of my early classes in undergrad that I enjoyed so much that after I graduated from undergrad, I immediately applied for dental school. I’m naturally a creative person, so I felt using my creativeness can give me a lead way in the industry.”

What made you want to work for People’s Center?

“I remember seeing an interview of a young girl on the news last year during the summer. The interviewer ask the girl what can people do to fix racism in Minneapolis and she said it’s not about fixing racism, it’s about making a change in people’s lives who are affected the most by racism.”

“I have over 20 years of working in the dental industry so I felt working at People’s Center was a great way to help the community around me and change the lives of people who live in this area.”

What is your favorite part of being a Dentist?

“I love giving patients confidence and seeing the before and after of their teeth. There are many patients that come in and will cover their mouth when speaking or even refuse to smile because they feel their teeth aren’t in the best condition. Seeing patients that I have worked with for months smiling without covering their mouths for the first time in years is the best reward for me."

“I also love working with different age groups. I’ve worked with many patients from infants to patients who are over 100 years old!"

If there’s one thing you would like to tell people about dental care what would it be?

“In order to live a healthy lifestyle, you must take care of your body from head to toe and that includes taking care of your teeth. For me, cleaning your teeth is just as important as washing your hands.”
