Celebrating National Health Center Week

Ariella Tilsen, Interim CEO, People’s Center Clinics & Services

Earlier this year, with strong bipartisan support, Congress invested significantly in community health centers. These centers serve over 27 million Americans. Legislators recognized that a strong community-based system, where people have access to doctors, other health care providers, mental health services, dental care, and preventive care, will both save lives and reduce health care costs.

The upcoming National Health Center Week 2018 (NHCW) provides an opportunity to visit People’s Center Clinics & Services, a community health center in Minneapolis’s Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, and see firsthand why these centers play such a vital role in our country’s changing health care landscape.

People’s Center’s mission is to provide affordable, high-quality care, inspire hope, and promote community wellness. We look beyond medical charts not only to prevent illness, but to help address factors that contribute to poor health, such as poverty, homelessness, substance use, mental health concerns, poor nutrition, and unemployment. We are also proven innovators and problem-solvers in treating chronic disease.

At People’s Center, people don’t have to navigate a maze to see a dentist or fill a prescription. We treat the whole patient (and their family) with a range of integrated, culturally responsive services and programs located under one roof. We provide everyone with easy access to care, no matter who they are, where they are from, or whether they have an insurance card.

We could not accomplish these goals without the work of our gracious, dedicated and talented staff. This week we celebrate them.

The theme of this year’s National Health Center Week is “Celebrating Health Centers: Home of America’s Health Care Heroes.” During NHCW, we invite you to visit People’s Center and learn about the range of services and programs we offer. Talk with our super health care hero clinicians and staff, and find out why community health centers are essential to our nation’s health. Also visit us online at www.peoples-center.org.
